Date: 21 – 26 September 2026

Description:

This program offers participants fundamental and advanced concepts in mathematical modeling, with particular emphasis on biological phenomena and population dynamics. The program explores ordinary differential equations (ODEs), partial differential equations (PDEs), and related mathematical frameworks through the perspective of (stochastic) dynamical systems and their applications in mathematical modeling. The program also provides hands-on exercises and numerical simulations that strengthen participants’ practical skills in computationally solving mathematical models using Python.

The program uses English as the official language of instruction. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, awards certificates of participation to participants who complete the program

Prerequisites:

Participants are expected to have basic knowledge of algebra and calculus at the undergraduate level, as well as basic programming skills in Python. Since numerical simulations and computational exercises will mainly use Python 3, participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptop with Python 3 and the relevant packages installed.

Program Structure:

The program organizes six days of lectures, group work, presentations, and social activities.

  • Day 1     : Introduction to population dynamics, difference equations, dynamical systems, and numerical simulations.

  • Day 2     : Discussion on infectious disease models, delay dynamical systems, and parameter estimation in biological models.
  • Day 3     : Exploration of specific and advanced topics in mathematical modeling, followed by project topic assignments from the lecturers.

  • Day 4     : Group work activities on selected mathematical modeling problems under the guidance of the facilitators.

  • Day 5     : Final project presentations from each group.
  • Day 6     : Social and networking activities for all participants.
