The history of the Department of Mathematics Mathematics and Natural Sciences Unesa cannot be separated from the history of the establishment of the Teacher Training Faculty of IKIP Surabaya based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science number 182/1964 dated 19 December 1964, which is a decree concerning the establishment of the Surabaya Teaching and Education Institution (IKIP ) which at the time had 5 faculties: the Faculty of Education (FIP), the Faculty of Social Sciences Teaching (FKIS), the Faculty of Art Literature (FKSS), the Teacher Training Faculty (FKIE), and the Teaching Engineering Faculty (FKIT).
The history of Unesa cannot be separated from IKIP Surabaya, which began around 1950. Starting from the BI and B-II courses in Chemistry and Physics which utilize facilities and infrastructure in the form of classrooms and laboratories from Dutch education, Hoogere Burger Schol (HBS). The course is held in Surabaya to meet the needs of middle and high school teachers. The courses include: (a) BI Chemistry and B-II, (b) BI and BII Sciences, (c) BI English, (d) BI German Language, (e) BI Engineering, (f) Physical BI Education , (g)) BI Economics, (h) BI Commerce, and (i) BI Aerospace Science. In 1957, BI courses were grouped into two, namely (1) general BI courses, covering English and German, and (2) BI vocational courses, covering Chemistry, Science, Economics, Commerce, Engineering, Engineering, Physical Education, and Science Aerospace. These courses last until 1960.
To eliminate the dualism of B-I and B-II courses with graduates who do not
holds a bachelor's degree, and the Teacher Training and Education Faculty (FKIP) produces graduates with a degree, with MPRS Decree No. 11 / MPRS / 1960 both courses are integrated into the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) which produces secondary school teachers. Furthermore, the institution, based on Minister of Education and Culture Decree number 6/1961 dated February 7, 1961, was integrated into one of the faculties at FKIP Airlangga University Malang Branch and named FKIP Airlangga University Surabaya Branch.
In 1962 with the founding of the Teacher Education Academy (APG), which
then becoming the Teacher Education Institute (IPG), dualism reappeared. To eliminate this dualism, based on Presidential Decree number 1/1963 dated January 3, 1963, IPG and FKIP were integrated into the Teaching and Education Institute (IKIP). With this integration FKIP Universitas Airlangga in Malang, on May 20, 1964, the status was changed to IKIP Malang Central and FKIP Universitas Airlangga Surabaya Branch was changed to IKIP Malang Malang Branch. Such a situation lasted until 19 December 1964.
With the integration of the College of Sports into IKIP Surabaya to become the Faculty of Sports Science since 1977, based on the Republic of Indonesia Government Regulation number 27/1981 IKIP Surabaya has 6 faculties: the Faculty of Education (FIP), the Faculty of Language and Arts Education (FPBS)), the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Natural Sciences (FPMIPA), Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FPIPS), Faculty of Technology and Vocational Education (FPTK), and Faculty of Sports and Health Education (FPOK).
Furthermore, based on Presidential Decree No. 93/1999 dated August 4, 1999, IKIP Surabaya obtained an expanded mandate by changing to Surabaya State University (Unesa) by managing 6 faculties: Faculty of Education (FIP), Faculty of Language and Literature (FBS), Faculty Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS), Faculty of Engineering (FT), and Faculty of Sport Sciences (FIK).
